Blogger Secret #1: The Third Piece Rule

Recently I fished up an article on Pinterest with a totally click bait title that hooked me immediately: Fashion Blogger Secret: The Third Piece Rule.

According to WhoWhatWear the secret to looking stylish is to add a third element (not including your jacket or shoes) to your outfit. Otherwise: Accessorize. Uh, thanks Captain Obvious.

But maybe it's not so obvious?

Today's outfit delights me in many ways but it really does boil down to the impact of the third (and fourth and fifth) piece rule. Had I not applied that theory, the outfit would have looked like this:

MappCraft | 3 Fashion Blogger Secrets Worth Stealing - #1 The 3rd Piece Rule

Not horrible. But how about one more layer - an accent color to break up the grey, perhaps?

Now just a few more accessories, to make the look "pop."

Now you're ready to go - once you add a jacket, shoes and bag.

VOILA! So simple. Just add one more piece and you've performed outfit magic.

Okay, that's a lot of extra pieces but you see my point. It's the considered extras that add oomph to an outfit, which is exactly why I preach that you should maintain a well edited capsule wardrobe and flex your fashion fun in the accessory department.

Blogger Secret #2: Power Palette

It's easy to create a personal Power Palette. First start with 3 - 4 Neutral anchor colors (take a look at your shoe collection for inspiration). Now, think back to what were you wearing the last time someone said "that color looks amazing on you!" Bam! Accent color #1. Now add 3-4 additional colors to complement the color that complements you. Get creative.

Blogger Secret #3: Layering

MappCraft | 3 Blogger Secrets Worth Stealing, #3 Layering

MappCraft | 3 Blogger Secrets Worth Stealing, #3 Layering

The last critical element of this style hack trifecta is my favorite technique -- layering. A sliver of the poppy red J.Crew silk cami sandwiched between the heather grey Market & Spruce hi-lo tee and the charcoal grey Banana Republic mini skirt makes all the difference.

Sure the outfit would have worked without it, but that simple element illustrates the thesis of the Third Piece Rule:

“It adds nuance to an otherwise run-of-the-mill outfit, making you look put together, polished, more interesting and like you put a little effort into your look.”

Simply Perfect

Out of all 36 garments in my Summer 2016 capsule wardrobe, this vibrant purple no name silk slip dress, a $19.99 TJ Maxx impulse purchase from 2011, is easily the most elegant.

Her sumptuous fabric, delicate spaghetti straps and cinched waist aren't particularly toddler-friendly details, but when the right occasion warrants a wear, she doesn't disappoint.

In Praise of the Slip Dress

Second to an understated sex appeal, my favorite thing about a slip dress is its unmatched versatility. With a simple switch of accessories you can go from office to out with ease and the classic simplicity of its silhouette shifts between style archetypes like a sartorial super hero.

Seriously! Say that three times fast.

For a summer cute meets business casual look,  I layered a lightweight linen cardigan on top and paired the look with flat gold sandals. A Hermes silk twill scarf folded length wise and worn around the neck adds a conservative touch, my orange Hermes Collier de Chien Cuff reminds you I am not at all conservative and a beaded green pendant picks up teal accents in the purple print scarf. Lastly, my trusty beige Loeffler Randall work tote goes with everything and is sized perfectly for a laptop, with plenty of extra room to house happy hour shoes and make up.

For a quick transition from work to fun, I lose the cardigan, switch out the gold flats for nude peep toes and re-tie my scarf around my waist. The cuff and pendant remain as is. With a swift handbag switch and a swipe of punchy pink lip balm (TheBalm Meet Matte Hughes in Chivalrous is EVERYTHING) - I'm ready for rose.

A Minimalist doesn't ALWAYS wear all black. The clean lines of a slip dress make it the perfect canvas to accessorize with architectural accents and a muted metallic pallet.

Classically Chic

How a Classically Chic Girl Wears a Slip Dress

A Classically Chic gal is drawn to structured garments and timeless accessories. She grounds the fluid drape of a slip dress with a sharp blazer and tempers the purple with a neutral bag and shoes. True to form, her diamond pendant never goes out of style (or off her neck) but she's not afraid to add personality with signature arm candy.

Free Spirit

How a Free Spirit Wears a Slip Dress

A Free Spirit loves her clothes to sway and swish and is inspired by any bygone, easy going era. With its clear homage to vintage Halston, a slip dress hits both marks. She layers her dress under an open kimono and pairs with a fringe bag.  Natural stone earrings project good vibes, a draped gold lariat calls attention to her neck and modern caged sandals keep her looking fresh.

Editorial Eclectic

How an Editorial Eclectic Wears a Slip Dress

Miss Editorial Eclectic approaches fashion like a mixed media artist. She confidently blends colors, textures, prints and fabric into every outfit. When pairing the deep purple slip dress with every jewel tone in her closet, her mind draws Jungle Book parallels from the bold palm print jacket to the gold winged ear cuff. Clutching a richly beaded handbag on her way to NYFW, she trots up the Lincoln Center stairs in tropical yellow it-girl heels, followed by a throng of bloggers vying for her street shot.

How To Stand Out in Black: S16 Outfit #4

Stop me if you've heard this one.

On Saturday afternoon I returned home after a long morning herding toddlers. I pulled open my shirt drawer to change into something comfortable and quickly sensed something was amiss amongst the cotton.

My eyes expected flat textile but were met instead by a ripple of detail and depth. Suddenly, as if I was staring at an optical illusion poster in a long remodeled dentist's office, I realized what I was seeing. Languishing between a short stack of black t-shirts was a tightly coiled black snake.

Digest that while I address the thesis statement of this blog post.

How do you stand out in black? Texture! Details! Depth! Had my eyes not paused on the luxurious tactile quality of his grooved skin, I would have reached into my shirt drawer and grabbed an handful of cold blooded reptile.

Anyone who has ever been to NYC knows that black is eternally chic. Black matches everything, makes you look skinny and looks expensive. Black's versatility makes it a critical staple of any minimalist wardrobe. All I am suggesting is that you make like the snake and amp up your detail game.

The Only Dress You Need This Spring: S16 Outfit #3

Make it a button down denim shirt dress. Why would I promote a dress that isn't even in my capsule wardrobe, you ask? I forgot to bring it to the photoshoot.

Moving on...

I purchased this indigo GAP denim button down shirt dress this winter and have been floored by her versatility. A MINIMALista works a highly curated wardrobe and as such it is necessary that each of her garments work overtime. When considering a new purchase I ask myself several questions. And then I answer them in my head as if I were talking to a single party girl, apparently.

  1. Does it complement my palette? DudeDenim matches everything.
  2. Does it layer? Like a boss! Wear it alone, under a sweater, open over a dress or BAM! Open over your bikini at Coachella. Marquee Day Club? SLS South Beach! Wow. Really? I'll be at the Holmes Run community pool.
  3. Can it transition through seasons? Absolutely, but grab a lighter wash for Spring/Summer.
  4. Can I accessorize it up or down? Girlllll. Think wedges for work, bold sneakers for weekend or cage heels for date night. Add a colorful scarf and switch up your bag accordingly. Cool girl cred sorted.

If you are anything like my jet setting imaginary girlfriend above, or you just like the idea of a versatile shirt dress, here are some suggestions to help you cop the look.

Look #1: Ultra Music Festival (#IRL or on BPM)

LOOK #2: Netflix and Chill (But First: Dinner)

LOOK #3: Casual Thursday (75°, No Meetings, Long Lunch)

LOOK #4: Union Market for Buffalo & Bergen Bloodys

Honey the options are limitless. Show me how you rock your denim button down! Share your pics and your feedback on the MappCraft MINIMALista Facebook page and tag your best outfits.
