Blogger Secret #1: The Third Piece Rule

Recently I fished up an article on Pinterest with a totally click bait title that hooked me immediately: Fashion Blogger Secret: The Third Piece Rule.

According to WhoWhatWear the secret to looking stylish is to add a third element (not including your jacket or shoes) to your outfit. Otherwise: Accessorize. Uh, thanks Captain Obvious.

But maybe it's not so obvious?

Today's outfit delights me in many ways but it really does boil down to the impact of the third (and fourth and fifth) piece rule. Had I not applied that theory, the outfit would have looked like this:

MappCraft | 3 Fashion Blogger Secrets Worth Stealing - #1 The 3rd Piece Rule

MappCraft | 3 Fashion Blogger Secrets Worth Stealing - #1 The 3rd Piece Rule

Not horrible. But how about one more layer - an accent color to break up the grey, perhaps?

Now just a few more accessories, to make the look "pop."

Now you're ready to go - once you add a jacket, shoes and bag.

VOILA! So simple. Just add one more piece and you've performed outfit magic.

Okay, that's a lot of extra pieces but you see my point. It's the considered extras that add oomph to an outfit, which is exactly why I preach that you should maintain a well edited capsule wardrobe and flex your fashion fun in the accessory department.

Blogger Secret #2: Power Palette

MappCraft | 3 Blogger Secrets Worth Stealing, #2 Power Palette

It's easy to create a personal Power Palette. First start with 3 - 4 Neutral anchor colors (take a look at your shoe collection for inspiration). Now, think back to what were you wearing the last time someone said "that color looks amazing on you!" Bam! Accent color #1. Now add 3-4 additional colors to complement the color that complements you. Get creative.

Blogger Secret #3: Layering

MappCraft | 3 Blogger Secrets Worth Stealing, #3 Layering

MappCraft | 3 Blogger Secrets Worth Stealing, #3 Layering

The last critical element of this style hack trifecta is my favorite technique -- layering. A sliver of the poppy red J.Crew silk cami sandwiched between the heather grey Market & Spruce hi-lo tee and the charcoal grey Banana Republic mini skirt makes all the difference.

Sure the outfit would have worked without it, but that simple element illustrates the thesis of the Third Piece Rule:

“It adds nuance to an otherwise run-of-the-mill outfit, making you look put together, polished, more interesting and like you put a little effort into your look.”

The Only Capsule Wardrobe E-Book You Actually Need

If you appreciate the practical "how to put an outfit together" tips in this blog post you are going to LOVE my new e-book!

MappCraft | Tiny Closet Essential Survival Guide is the definitive source for creating a customized capsule wardrobe (full of color, texture and personality) and cementing your personal style in the process.

4 Tips: How To Land An Epic Gift

The Art of The Ask

An effective capsule closet, one that guarantees out-the-door outfit solutions that make you feel fantastic every day, is hinged on a solid wardrobe core. Expertly crafted accessories and signature jewelry strengthen this core considerably.

Sartorial objects d’art do not come often, nor do they come cheap. Such investments must be plotted, planned and timed impeccably – which brings me to Christmas.

The holidays are a critical wardrobe core strengthening opportunity.

I will not let you blow this.

Here is my well-oiled, time-tested strategy to ensure that you wake up December 25 with a love token befitting of your year round fabulousness.

Epic Gift Tip #1 : Start Early

If you are embarking on this process today – we may be too late.  Men are not trained to read brains. It is your responsibility to approach this mission with thoughtful consideration to what you want and how to get it. I'd advise spending the five weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas researching by day and  – ahem – wifing by night.

Additionally, volunteer back rubs, ask him if he lost weight, laugh at his jokes and exclaim, “you’re so smart!” at least once.

Epic Gift Tip #2: Recruit Support

Toddlers are awesome at telling people things you told them not to repeat. Work this in your favor.

First, emphatically make your toddler promise not to tell Daddy about that time in Target when the check out boy told Mommy that she was the prettiest Mommy he’d ever seen.

Now wait one week and show toddler a picture of your gift.  Say “Isn’t that pretty for Mommy?” Make toddler promise not to show the picture to Daddy or tell Daddy how much Mommy wants the gift for Christmas. When toddler asks why, tell toddler you are sad because the gift is so expensive.

Try to fake cry a little.

Epic Gift Tip #3: Be Very, Very Specific

Now that we've laid the groundwork it's time to clarify exactly what we want for our Christmas gift. Print out a picture and information about your gift and tape it to the refrigerator. Circle the gift in red. Specify size, color, retailer and shipping deadline.

No need to be clear on price.

If you have a husband who insists on selecting his own gifts, present him with three options. Include the gift you actually want and two lovely but more expensive ideas.

Epic Gift Tip #4: Have A Back Up Plan

Let’s pretend it’s December 25. You put in the wife work, planted hints and provided impeccable purchase instructions. Surprise! Daddy bought Mommy a reindeer sweater and wind chimes.

Girl! Promise me you’ll buy that beautiful gift for your damn self. You have my permission. You earned it and your capsule wardrobe will thank you.

Whatever you do, don't tell Matt I want these gifts. They are just too much.

I hope you've enjoyed this satirical gift getting guide. I would never actually be so brazen in my attempts to land a gift. Or would I? Only Santa knows for sure.

You know what would make a great gift for less than $10? (Hint: It's an e-book I wrote.)

Long Story, Short

Like my LuLaRoe Key Piece #1: Perfect Tee, Striped, I was mega perplexed by LaLaRoe Key Piece #3: Sarah Cardigan, Heather Grey courtesy of LuLaRoe Teri and Molly

Was Sarah a cape? A wizardry robe? Musketeer outerwear?

No, friends. Sarah is a maxi-cardi. Also known as a "duster." Second to prancing unicorn and food staple leggings, LuLaRoe ladies LOVE this floor kissing cardigan.

Guys! I am a 90's hip-hop variety shortie. At 5'1, I'll never enjoy the luxury of purchasing pants or a long dress off the rack: I have to hem "Ankle Length" denim. So you understand my hesitation.

"To the tailor with you!" I proclaimed, to no one in particular.

You know how life goes. Stuff happened, kids got sick, time moves too fast and my tailor keeps piss poor hours. Long story short, I never ended up hemming the thing.

Such is the case with all things LuLaRoe, apparently, my challenge was solved by a well placed knot.

Grey on Grey Looks Great on You

For look numero uno (above and below) I went grey all the way, pairing my Sarah Cardigan with solid grey LuLaRoe OS Leggings, courtesy of LuLaRoe Consultant Cheryl Holloway, and a grey LuLaRoe Classic Tee, courtesy of LuLaRoe Consultant Jeanna Hilton.

To elongate my short lines and add some color, I accessorized with a red sugar skull print scarf, which also picked up the red accent on my New Balance 696 sneakers.

Inside Job

The element that made this look plausible was an epic knotting technique courtesy of my photographer Amanda. She gathered a handful of fabric at the base of my spine and secured it with a hair tie - on the inside of the cardigan. Brilliant!

Sarah + Julia = LuLaRoe 101

For outfit #2, I layered my Sarah Cardigan over a black Julia Dress, courtesy of LuLaRoe Consultants Kate and Jamie. This look is quintessential LuLaRoe style. And why not? The proportions work and nobody appreciates a chilly back half. Personalize your version with fun shoes - like these Loeffler Randall cut out platform booties I've owned since 2008.

LuLaRoe Sarah: Sarong, It's Right

This last look ended up being my favorite of the entire shoot. Funny thing, it's the same outfit base as look #1 but accessorized with a blingy J.Crew statement necklace, a metallic Loeffler Randall cosmetic case for clutch and funky Loeffler Randall booties. In a flash of inspiration I tied the bottoms of the Sarah cardigan sarong style, with the knot to the side at my hip. Sass-o-rama!

Astro Style: The Saturn Life Lesson I Found Hanging In My Closet

Astro Style: The Saturn Life Lesson I Found Hanging In My Closet

Astro Style: The Saturn Life Lesson I Found Hanging In My Closet

Summer 2016 is donzo and while Instagram mourns the end of festival season I'm chill AF about it.

The past few months have been a hot, slow slog towards enlightened self awareness. I don't know what's been going on in your universe but I am officially exhausted from over thinking my purpose and ready to get on with the next transit of my life.

Girl, I know you feel the same way. We all do.

Over the past few months, the energetic approach of today's (Wednesday, August 24, 2016) power punch Mars conjunct Saturn transit forced us to confront what we really want out of life and kicked us in the pants to craft an action plan.

This is your chance to release those old pattens once and for all – and to welcome in the new stuff you really want to build and create. When Mars and Saturn meet tomorrow morning, they will start a new two-year cycle around our life’s work, how we take action, our belief systems, and the structures in our lives.
— Anne Ortelee, www.anneortelee.com

That sounds productive, yes?

On paper.

In real time, this energy has erupted our sense of security with upsets, chaos and hella emotional upheaval. However painful, the process holds a mirror in the face of our outdated stories and the areas of our lives that simply don't inspire joy.

That's Saturn for you - a real ball buster.

The Mars-Saturn chart (is about) seeing the patterns, releasing them, and creating new ones that support you... (it could) bring “fated” events, where we don’t always have free will. Think of it as a cosmic course-correction, redirecting you to where you’re meant to go.
— Anne Ortelee, www.anneortelee.com

Don't fret, I won't burden you with a deep tale of existential crisis. My monumental A-HA was hanging in my tiny closet.

Archetypal Influences

In July I started How to Cement Your Personal Style, a two part (and counting) interactive Pinterest activity that explores 9 primary Style Archetypes: Classically Chic, Edgy, Editorial Eclectic, Minimalist, Free Spirit, Americana, Full On Glam and Athleisure.

For weeks I poured over fashion bloggers and street style shots and categorized hundreds of looks, paying close attention to what images excited me and which fell flat.

I write about fashion and I only wear 35.7 painstakingly selected garments per season, so naturally I assumed I was in touch with my personal style: Classically Chic for work and Editorial Eclectic + Athlesuire for weekend.

Classically Chic by Day

Weekend Eclectic with a Side of Athleisure

Findings

My weekend Eclectic meets Athleisure aspirations are solid but I do need to up my sneaker and textured overcoat game. Overall though, this look is still me. I like it. It vibes.

But Classically Chic? Not so much. I never wear the business garments I've kept in my capsule. Pencil skirts, blazers, blouses and killer heels simply don't serve me anymore. Instead, they reflect a bygone era before children when I was career obsessed and hell bent on dressing exactly like my boss.

The Forgotten

So what do I actually wear? A rotating mix of fluid, soft fabrics with stretch, paired with flat sandals, a novelty tank or slouchy top and piled on accessories.

On Repeat

The realization I'd gone boho completely contradicts an image (and ambition) I was clinging to yet had long since outgrown.

You do not attend an executive level meeting in flat shoes, distressed denim and a gauzy t-shirt.

That's what you wear when you write about fashion, chase your children, practice yoga and work from home helping small businesses build a brand identity.

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Business Boho

How To Stand Out in Black: S16 Outfit #4

Stop me if you've heard this one.

On Saturday afternoon I returned home after a long morning herding toddlers. I pulled open my shirt drawer to change into something comfortable and quickly sensed something was amiss amongst the cotton.

My eyes expected flat textile but were met instead by a ripple of detail and depth. Suddenly, as if I was staring at an optical illusion poster in a long remodeled dentist's office, I realized what I was seeing. Languishing between a short stack of black t-shirts was a tightly coiled black snake.

Digest that while I address the thesis statement of this blog post.

How do you stand out in black? Texture! Details! Depth! Had my eyes not paused on the luxurious tactile quality of his grooved skin, I would have reached into my shirt drawer and grabbed an handful of cold blooded reptile.

Anyone who has ever been to NYC knows that black is eternally chic. Black matches everything, makes you look skinny and looks expensive. Black's versatility makes it a critical staple of any minimalist wardrobe. All I am suggesting is that you make like the snake and amp up your detail game.
