Blogger Secret #1: The Third Piece Rule

Recently I fished up an article on Pinterest with a totally click bait title that hooked me immediately: Fashion Blogger Secret: The Third Piece Rule.

According to WhoWhatWear the secret to looking stylish is to add a third element (not including your jacket or shoes) to your outfit. Otherwise: Accessorize. Uh, thanks Captain Obvious.

But maybe it's not so obvious?

Today's outfit delights me in many ways but it really does boil down to the impact of the third (and fourth and fifth) piece rule. Had I not applied that theory, the outfit would have looked like this:

Not horrible. But how about one more layer - an accent color to break up the grey, perhaps?

Now just a few more accessories, to make the look "pop."

Now you're ready to go - once you add a jacket, shoes and bag.

VOILA! So simple. Just add one more piece and you've performed outfit magic.

Okay, that's a lot of extra pieces but you see my point. It's the considered extras that add oomph to an outfit, which is exactly why I preach that you should maintain a well edited capsule wardrobe and flex your fashion fun in the accessory department.

Blogger Secret #2: Power Palette

It's easy to create a personal Power Palette. First start with 3 - 4 Neutral anchor colors (take a look at your shoe collection for inspiration). Now, think back to what were you wearing the last time someone said "that color looks amazing on you!" Bam! Accent color #1. Now add 3-4 additional colors to complement the color that complements you. Get creative.

Blogger Secret #3: Layering

The last critical element of this style hack trifecta is my favorite technique -- layering. A sliver of the poppy red J.Crew silk cami sandwiched between the heather grey Market & Spruce hi-lo tee and the charcoal grey Banana Republic mini skirt makes all the difference.

Sure the outfit would have worked without it, but that simple element illustrates the thesis of the Third Piece Rule:

“It adds nuance to an otherwise run-of-the-mill outfit, making you look put together, polished, more interesting and like you put a little effort into your look.”

Wearing Clothes vs. Wearing an Outfit

From the stiff-ish collar popping out from under her sweater, to the way she half tucks her tee shirt to the quirky personal touches she adds to each outfit - when a stylish girl walks in a room, everyone notices.

We all know a girl that always looks put together.

This is her secret.

The 4 Step Outfit Formula

Styling doesn't come easily to everyone, but it's definitely a skill you can hone if you break the process down to basics.

Step 1: Outfit Base

The critical first step to creating an outfit is pretty straightforward - start with a base. Be it a top plus pants, jeans, shorts or a skirt; a dress or a jumpsuit, the outfit base refers simply to the clothes that cover your nakedness. Totally utilitarian.

A lot of women start and end at this step. Sure, you can leave the house in this get up, but with no hints of texture or personality - no one will mistake it for stylish.

I recommend going through your wardrobe and identifying 5-6 core bases to build outfits around. Select classic garments that fit well and reflect your lifestyle. This will streamline your process and provide a reliable template to reference when creating looks.

Step 2: Add a Layer

Now things start to get interesting. Once you've settled on your outfit base the next step is to add a layer. Layers are like throw pillows -- they add visual interest, color or texture and may or may not serve a functional purpose.

Examples of layers include another top, a cardigan, a vest, a printed wrap or a blazer, leather bomber or denim jacket you plan to wear all day (not outerwear).

Step 3: Make It Pop

Woo Hoo! Accessories in the house! Now that you've got your functional base sorted and you've created dimension with a layer, it's time to add personality with accessories. Jewelry is a given, but also consider a scarf (around the neck, your head, your wrist, your ponytail), a belt, hair flair, a hat or a cluster of pins.

Step 4: Out The Door

Look at you girl! Almost ready to go. Time to add the ultimate finishing touches - bag, shoes and outerwear (if necessary). The formality and details of your outfit will dictate which shoes and bag you choose. If you are feeling a bit monochromatic, add color with a bag. If the outfit is heavy on color and prints, ground it with neutral footwear. Don't be afraid to rock sneakers with a suit pant or a metallic clutch with denim. And NO! your shoes and bag do not have to match.

How To Stand Out in Black: S16 Outfit #4

Stop me if you've heard this one.

On Saturday afternoon I returned home after a long morning herding toddlers. I pulled open my shirt drawer to change into something comfortable and quickly sensed something was amiss amongst the cotton.

My eyes expected flat textile but were met instead by a ripple of detail and depth. Suddenly, as if I was staring at an optical illusion poster in a long remodeled dentist's office, I realized what I was seeing. Languishing between a short stack of black t-shirts was a tightly coiled black snake.

Digest that while I address the thesis statement of this blog post.

How do you stand out in black? Texture! Details! Depth! Had my eyes not paused on the luxurious tactile quality of his grooved skin, I would have reached into my shirt drawer and grabbed an handful of cold blooded reptile.

Anyone who has ever been to NYC knows that black is eternally chic. Black matches everything, makes you look skinny and looks expensive. Black's versatility makes it a critical staple of any minimalist wardrobe. All I am suggesting is that you make like the snake and amp up your detail game.

The Only Dress You Need This Spring: S16 Outfit #3

Make it a button down denim shirt dress. Why would I promote a dress that isn't even in my capsule wardrobe, you ask? I forgot to bring it to the photoshoot.

Moving on...

I purchased this indigo GAP denim button down shirt dress this winter and have been floored by her versatility. A MINIMALista works a highly curated wardrobe and as such it is necessary that each of her garments work overtime. When considering a new purchase I ask myself several questions. And then I answer them in my head as if I were talking to a single party girl, apparently.

  1. Does it complement my palette? DudeDenim matches everything.
  2. Does it layer? Like a boss! Wear it alone, under a sweater, open over a dress or BAM! Open over your bikini at Coachella. Marquee Day Club? SLS South Beach! Wow. Really? I'll be at the Holmes Run community pool.
  3. Can it transition through seasons? Absolutely, but grab a lighter wash for Spring/Summer.
  4. Can I accessorize it up or down? Girlllll. Think wedges for work, bold sneakers for weekend or cage heels for date night. Add a colorful scarf and switch up your bag accordingly. Cool girl cred sorted.

If you are anything like my jet setting imaginary girlfriend above, or you just like the idea of a versatile shirt dress, here are some suggestions to help you cop the look.

Look #1: Ultra Music Festival (#IRL or on BPM)

LOOK #2: Netflix and Chill (But First: Dinner)

LOOK #3: Casual Thursday (75°, No Meetings, Long Lunch)

LOOK #4: Union Market for Buffalo & Bergen Bloodys

Honey the options are limitless. Show me how you rock your denim button down! Share your pics and your feedback on the MappCraft MINIMALista Facebook page and tag your best outfits.
